About Us

A study undertaken at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi and published in the Ghana Medical Journal (Ghana Med J. 2012 March; 46 (1):8-13), stated that breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Ghanaian women and most patients with breast cancer come to hospitals to report the disease at very advanced stages, limiting their chances of successful treatment.

This point was buttressed in a release by ‘Citi FM Online’ (26th May 2012), which reported that the Vice President of Ghana, John Dramani stated at a health walk in Kumasi that most women who die from breast cancer often report their condition to the hospital when the situation has become very acute.

He blamed this on the tendency of such patients to resort to herbal and spiritual treatment instead of seeking orthodox care. Such patients also blame the presence of breast cancer and other diseases on demonic attack.

“The time has come for us to stop attributing the outbreak of diseases to witches and wizards and rather work hard to change that aspect of our lifestyle that is contributing to creating many health challenges for us on a daily basis,” he said.

The Judith-Ellen Awuah-Darko (JEAD) foundation for breast cancer also conducted a survey in the Eastern Region of Ghana in 2010 which showed that among other reasons why most patients sought treatment at a late stage, they had no prior knowledge of the disease.

Others who had some knowledge about breast diseases also thought that orthodox management would be too costly and risky and so only came to hospitals when all other avenues available to them were exhausted.

In order to change these beliefs, help promote quality health care and reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer, the founder of the foundation, a survivor of breast cancer herself, decided to assist in early detection and effective management of breast diseases.

JEAD breast cancer foundation is a registered non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable group to combat the menace of breast cancer...
